Software developers are in high demand. If you have the skills and knowledge to be a developer, you will already have an upper edge than most people who can’t code. The vast majority of startups in technology begin their hiring with software developers, so this is a great field if you want to work for a startup or technology company.

What’s a day in the life of a software developer?
My days vary drastically. First thing I do is send out emails to the people that I need to meet with in the near future. I’m working on a project that involves visualizing 25 years worth of service learning data (undergraduates who performed service in the community through either a course or program event), and we’re still in the process of centralizing all of our data. I’m doing a bunch of reaching out to various techs and department directors to accomplish this.
After those are sent, I’ll perform a couple queries on our database and then I’ll build a couple of visuals to describe my findings. After lunch I’ll continue working on a room reservation system that I’m developing for the college. After a couple hours of that, I’ll start merging another decade of service learning data that we’ve collected into the database that I’ve set up. I expect errors but that’s a good thing because handling exceptions is a pretty mindless task and that’s exactly the kind of thing I like to do in the late afternoon.
What do you love about your job?
What I love most about my job is the freedom and independence, and the respect and responsibility that my tech skill set commands here in higher education. I get to choose what I work on and when, and I get to answer questions that researchers here have been struggling with for years in a matter of moments using computation.
