We get asked a lot how we decide what companies to partner with for our intensive business programs. Is it intentional? What are our criteria? Here’s how we answer:
1. We look for companies that not only are hiring, but are excited about hiring Korus. We want companies that live our mission of leveling the playing field for grads entering the workforce.
2. We look for companies that would be a great place to start your career — companies with strong values, a rock solid culture, and many opportunities for growth.
This month, our first Boston program of the summer is working with Swipely, a Providence-based company that offers an all-in-one marketing and payment platform for small businesses. Our cohort of college students and grads spent the month working on a real project for the company, gaining invaluable hands-on experience inside a high-growth startup.
We sat down with the team at Swipely to talk more about their company culture, and what they look for when hiring. Here’s what they had to say:
What’s the mission at Swipely?
“Small Changes, Big Impact”
We believe that small changes can have a big impact, and each of us comes to work every day to make an impact — to our company, in our community, and for our customers. We’re here to change the world, not to float from day to day.
For example, we commit to making an impact in the Providence community, as well as to causes important to our organization such as education. We encourage our team members to be leaders externally.
Our culture believes in “everyday leadership” at all levels. Unique to a startup is the ability to sit across from a senior executive and talk shop about where our product is going and how you can support its growth. If you see a problem, fix it. Don’t assume you can’t impact the problem.
What are some things that unify people at Swipely?
Passion: Our team at Swipely is passionate about the local business owner, our product’s impact on the world, and their role in that. We are lifelong learners here, and we grow and develop by feeding off one another’s passion.
Love For Local Business: We love local. We are driven by a desire to give businesses the tools they need to succeed, and love cutting through the noise to get at what matters most our customers’ business.
Small Changes, Big Impact: Aside from our belief in small changes, big impact on our community, company, and for our customers, we also believe in internal and external leadership. Again, we are a culture of “everyday leadership.”

What is the culture like at Swipely?
We strive for a culture of action, centered on our values of team, local, and impact. Every member of our team is driven to improve our product and company, and to tackle situations and problems. When facing a roadblock, we simply “find a way” — moving forward with determination and drive. After all, the inches we need are all around us.
What are important traits to look for when hiring?
At a basic level, we look for people who can get excited about the value our product brings to our customers. They’re passionate about something connected with us (e.g. big data, restaurant/hospitality industry, startups, Rhode Island). We also look for people who are driven to succeed and see learning as a crucial component to that. It’s not just about “hitting a number,” it’s about unpacking how to get better, and taking ownership over your own growth. Lastly, we look for people who set goals and then create a plan to achieve those goals.
