Alicia received a Nas Scholarship to attend Koru‘s September 2014 program in San Francisco, where she worked on a business challenge for LinkedIn. She now works at Creative Live in San Francisco, an online learning platform that broadcasts classes to an international audience. Here’s her story.
How did you hear about the Koru’s Nas Scholarship Program?
I heard about the Nas Scholarship and Koru through an Entertainment News website that was doing a feature on Nas and his most recent endeavors. I immediately got into contact with someone at Koru about applying to their next program.
What made you a Nas Scholar?
My story made me a Nas Scholar. While I had a story specific and unique to my personal experiences, elements of my story were quite applicable to anyone facing the challenges of life. Similar to how Nas shares his perspectives and experiences unique to him through his rap, elements of his raps are relatable and personal on a universal and deeper level. In sharing my story, I was able to show that I had the potential to be a Nas Scholar and to showcase experiences that were rooted in grit and perseverance – and that I was ready to get everything I could out of the Koru program.
What was your favorite moment at Koru?
The Koru experience offered so many memorable moments, but one moment that was particularly distinct was the daily routine of purposefully sharing fears with others, and facing fears as an individual and as a group. In short, my favorite moment was facing fears daily in an intentional manner.
What do you recommend to someone about to go through the Koru program?
I recommend to someone about to go through the Koru program to network, network, network and utilize the experiences of those before you (i.e coaches, guest speakers, peers) as leverage to help yourself and those around you!
Koru runs immersive business programs to help college students and recent graduates find career direction and build the skills and experience they’ll need to land a great first job. In May 2014, Koru announced that Nas was investing in Koru and establishing a scholarship fund to help grads with grit go through the program.
